Opera has introduced a new AI tool, powered by ChatGPT, to its browser’s sidebar, which generates concise summaries of articles and webpages. This feature, named “shorten”, is part of Opera’s wider initiative to integrate artificial intelligence into its browser, similar to Microsoft’s recent move with Edge. By clicking the “shorten” button located beside the address bar, a ChatGPT-powered sidebar will appear, providing a well-structured summary of the page being viewed.

The launch of Opera’s “shorten” tool comes shortly after Microsoft’s unveiling of AI-powered Bing and Edge, which features an AI chatbot offering annotated answers and an AI “copilot” for summarizing articles and generating text for social media. Google also demonstrated its AI search bot, Bard, this week, but it is not yet available for public use.

Opera’s Head of Strategic Partnerships and AI Ecosystem, Per Wetterdal, stated, “We are thrilled to see the rapid development of AI solutions such as Google Bard, and we’re working hard to bring new and improved experiences to web browsing.” Despite the exciting news, the “shorten” feature is not yet available to the public, but Opera’s Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Jan Standel, has assured that it will be launched in browsers soon. Additionally, Opera is exploring other AI-powered features to enhance the browsing experience, and plans to add popular AI-generated content services to the sidebar, though the specifics remain unclear.
